Fill it to leave a tiny air gap.

I have just removed my swing arm because it was really in need of a lick of paint and needed to remove the shock as well.
I was looking through the posts on this forum and I came across your post and it has got me wondering if I should or could do mine?
I had a look in the Haynes manual and it says in the specs that the D model air pressure is not applicable and that it has an oil reservoir attached to the shock, well mine doesn't and its a D6, it does say on the sticker I found under all the muck on the shock Filled with Nitrogen gas though so any thoughts on what I should do.
Also what is the best setting on the preset at the bottom of the shock there are 4 presets at the moment its on 1
