ZZR1100 D4 "Sneezing"

Postby Freebird » Tue May 08, 2018 10:27 am

Hi All

This is my first post as it's the first problem I have had with my ZZR. Yep, it sneezes.........

It feels to me like a complete, momentary ignition cut-out in that you are riding along and it makes a big jolt as the ignition is cut and re-connected immediately. Sometimes it will do it every 10 to 15 miles, sometime not for longer, sometimes in rapid succession, though that is rare. I can simulate it by flicking the kill switch on and off.

I imagine there is a loose wire or dodgy connection somewhere, but where do I start looking? Has anyone else had the same issue and found a cure? It's spoiling my full enjoyment of the bike.

Cheers

Glen.

Intermittent problems are the worst to diagnose! maybe worth trying is to "hotwire" the thing with a temporary connection that takes fused power direct to the CDI. Ride like that for a few hours/days. If the problems goes away, then move the 'connection point' along one component at a time until the problem returns.

Sounds good in theory but may be a pain in practise, but I don't know how else to track it?

Not a bad plan at all, thanks.

Be careful here. The ignition switch has a resistor in it, this drops the voltage to the ignitor unit to around 9.4v, its an anti theft device. The problem could be corrosion in the ignition switch, side stand cutout switch, kill switch or clutch switch?

When does it do the sneezing ? Is it when sat on the stand running or when you are riding it ?

Hi

It sneezes pretty randomly, it can do it at high speed or low speed and yesterday I think it did it when I was entering a roundabout as the engine cut completely which was unnerving.

I have started bypassing switches one by one starting with the side stand switch - that made no difference so I think that discounts the clutch switch too.

Cheers
