ZZR1100 Engine Noise

Postby Daveyrach » Mon May 14, 2018 1:47 pm

Afternoon all,

I picked up my '96 ZZR1100-D4 on Friday just gone, I have scoured the past topics relating to engine noises and none of them seem to describe the noise I am experiencing.
It's quite a distinctive tap, but just once now and again, It only seems to be when the engine is cold and is irregular i.e. does not increase with revs, in fact in disappears when you rev or the engine is under load. Basically it is only audible when the engine is cold-ish and sat in neutral.
Almost sounds like it's missing on one cylinder when idling, I plan to check the plugs and have a new set ready to go in. Rode just over 50 miles at the weekend with no issues.

Bike has done 24k but there is no history with it other than the service the previous owner just had done, but that was just oil and filter, there is also a 10 year gap in MOT history according to the government website.

I am a competent DIYer so I'm happy taking things apart :)
Any advice greatly received

Cheers guys!

Couple of things to check.....valve clearances,... starter/alternator chain, .. balance shaft chain.... have you got a mechanics stethoscope,.. maybe pinpoint where the noise is coming from??
Welcome in. thumbup My 1200 turned over 68,000 the other weekend... and promptly spat the oil out of the rear shock.... got another one from Lithuania... came today.. PartyDance

Google "zzr 1100 starter chain tensioner" for some clues of a known issue. Not sure if it's what you have though?

Cheers for the reply and the welcome, I've done lots of research so lots to check I think, I'm quietly hopeful it's just one of the chains as I know the bike was sat for a while and I know how to check those, the head itself is very quiet, I think it was done recently.
I think your 1200 just wanted to be pampered lol

Cheers Brett, I'll be checking the Starter and cam chains over the weekend, hoping it's a quick easy fix, I've done lots of reading up :)

Another one is a rattle from the generator, stops when you put the lights on? Alternator/generator bolt loose. Could also be a leaking exhaust header joint?

Just to add to the starter chain tensioner issue, if it's this the you will see marks on the clutch basket/pressure plate where the tensioner arm has hit it. There won't be anything obviously wrong (unless you run the engine with the clutch crankcase cover off).

In my case I went with the kwick fix

http://www.kwickstand.net/Hyper-Formanc ... Tamer.html

However it's expensive. Initially I made do with a piece of tube over the tensioner rod that meant it couldn't physically reach the clutch anymore. If you've got a bit of tube the right diameter , probably worth fitting even if it's not hitting yet

Link to noise, it's quite hard to pick up but if you listen carefully there is a click/tap noise, I've tried to show it doesn't speed up with the engine.

Nothing obvious comes to mind - I'll ponder it...

It is isn't it, I have had a look through my Haynes manual and I'm not entirely sure what is behind this cover. Is it the starter chain?
